Abstract

A hernia occurs when an internal organ pushes through a weak spot in the body's muscle or tissue. There are several types of hernia, including inguinal hernias, femoral hernias, umbilical hernias, and hiatal hernias. Hernias usually do not get better on their own and surgery may be the only way to repair them. This book discusses different types of hernias and hernia surgeries, including open surgery, laparoscopic surgery, and robotic repair.

Abstract

The implementation of laparoscopy has revolutionized surgery over the past few years, incorporating significant benefits for the patient. However, this evolution has also entailed many technical obstacles for surgeons. This book is for readers wanting to learn more about recent surgical techniques and technologies. Topics cover novel sophisticated approaches for single-site surgery, natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery, and transanal surgery, among others. Also included are reviews of new innovative surgical devices, robotic platforms, and methodological guidelines for improving surgical performance and surgeon ergonomics.

Abstract

Laparoscopic surgery for the treatment of disorders such as urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse is evolving rapidly with few resources available for clinicians. This text will act as a gold standard reference in the field of laparoscopic urogynaecological surgery. The introductory section covers the basics of laparoscopy, including patient selection, surgical set up and the prevention and management of complications. Further sections focus on different "gold standard" techniques and the procedural steps needed to perform the surgery, including chapters on colposuspension, paravaginal repair, laparoscopic hysterectomy as well as apical suspensory surgery such as sacrocolpopexy and sacrohysteropexy. The final section includes debates and opinion pieces on newer techniques as well as discussion on the use of mesh in treating pelvic organ prolapse. There is also a section addressing the current rise in robotic surgery. The editors and contributors are all experts in the field, providing an authoritative and global view on techniques. Highly illustrated, with videos demonstrating the techniques, this is an eminently practical guide to the use of laparoscopy in urogynaecology.

Abstract

This is the first ever textbook completely devoted to single-incision minimally invasive gynecologic surgery. Expert gynecologic surgeons have collaborated to produce well-referenced and thought-provoking chapters on all common single-incision techniques in use today, including laparoscopic, robotic, and vaginal, with special sections devoted to hysterectomy and gynecologic oncology procedures. Chapter topics range from the history and fundamentals of procedures to a full technical instruction manual for step-by-step execution of common procedures. This text is designed for advanced gynecologic surgeons as well as fellows in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery fellowship programs.

Abstract

Minimally invasive or laparoscopic surgery is becoming increasingly commonplace, as technology has enabled a minimally invasive approach to be offered as a feasible alternative to conventional open surgery for a number of important surgical procedures. This comprehensive, but concise and practically oriented introduction to the subject was first published in 2004 and will be of value to all anaesthetists with an interest in minimally invasive techniques. It begins by covering the key aspects of basic physiology, moves on to patient preparation and positioning, monitoring, the anaesthetic procedures themselves (including possible complications and contraindications and easy-to-follow 'how to' guides for a number of key procedures) and, finally, post-operative pain. Written by a leading expert in the field, from a well-known European centre of excellence, it is essential reading for anaesthetists and intensivists at all levels of expertise.
